Snow on second night pesach a good sign- Rav Leibel Eiger Z"L

On the second night of  Pesach 2014 as the seder began, the tri state area experienced a rare April  snow fall. Those who live in Monsey,. Brooklyn, Lakewood looked outside as the children began singing kadesh urchatz.. and saw snow coming down mixed with hail. The tzadik Rav leibeleh Eiger writes in his Sefger Toras Emes( see below) that it is a good sign when it snows at the time of the seder since it means that klal yisrael has rectified the sins and that is also why we wear a white kittel just as we do on Yom Kippur. He writes that it is particularly the second night of pesach as we begin to count sefirah.

When the New York Times is more fair in reporting than the frum yeshiva news sites.

When reporting on the recent news story on Williamsburg were  NYC prosecutors charged 5 individuals  for beating a black man, one would think he is reading it in the biased NYT but no, its rather on  the Yeshiva world news and other frum blogs and websites.  We expect the frum news sites who we rely on for news reporting to keep it kosher and clean, but sadly that is not the case. The NYT actually had a pretty fair and balanced report. HERE

A blaring headline on YWN, HERE, NYPD arrests 4 members of williamsburg Chasidic community. A poor attempt to paint chasidim in a bad light. Then, no shock a quick look at the comments section were its up to the anons to spew their hate against yidden such as " Chasidism is not Judaism" or a full out attack against the Williamsburg Shomrim members and satmar chasidim in general.

The frum  print Newspapers have a responsibility and accounting for what they publish. The frum blogs and websites is a wild west with no oversight and all anonymous. We must not get fooled by the name Yeshiva world or another yiddish sounding name as vos iz nies. For now you  might as well rely on the NYT,  at least there you wont expect them to be held for a higher kosher standard.

Shlissel Challah, the Key to making it, the reasons behind it.

There is a minhag to bake shlissel challah (shlissel means key in Yiddish) for the Shabbos after Pesach. Shlisel challos are best known as a segula for parnasa,Some bake the challah with an actual key inside,
some make the challah in the shape of a key and some put sesame seeds on top in the form of a key. The Ohev Yisroel says about shlisel challah that “the minhagim of our fathers are most definitely Torah”. There are many reasons given for this minhag of baking shlissel challah; (Some of the items written below can also be found in Taamei Minhagim, Nitei Gavriel, Sefer Hatoda’a and Minhag Yisroel Torah)

First of all, the second mishna in Rosh Hashanah says on Pesach we are judged on the grains, parnasa. Rabbeinu Nissim asks if we are judged on Rosh Hashana then how are we judged on Pesach? He answers that on Pesach it is determined how much grain there will be in the coming year for the world, but on Rosh Hashana it is decided how much of that grain each individual receives. The Meiri, however, says that on Rosh Hashana it is decided if one will live or die, suffer or not and other such things, but on Pesach is when we are judged on the grains. Based on this there are customs in Sephardic communities to do things Motzei Pesach as a sign that we want Hashem to give us livelihood. In Aram Soba (Syria) and Turkey they put wheat kernels in all four corners of the house on Motzei Pesach as a sign of prosperity for the coming year. (Moed L’kol Chai -R’ Chaim Palagi, Beis Habichira). From a mishna we already see that there is a connection between Pesach and parnasa.

10 Reasons for Shlissel Challa on shabbos after Pesach

1).In Shir Hashirim (which we read on Pesach) it says פִּתְחִי-לִי אֲחֹתִי רַעְיָתִי - “Open for Me, My sister, My beloved". Chazal say that Hashem asks us to open up for Him a small whole like the tip of a needle and He will open up a huge hole for us. Also, Klal Yisroel is called a bride and they are called the bechina (aspect) of bread. During Pesach all the upper gates and minds are open and after Pesach they close and we need to open them. Therefore, we put a key in the challah after Pesach to hint at us opening a small “hole”, through the mitzvah of Shabbos (and, if I might add, the mitzvah of challah) and now Hashem should open up all His good from his storehouses and the heavens like He gave the mon to our fathers in the month of Iyar, and this Shabbos we bless the month of Iyar.

2) After Pesach is when the mon stopped falling and we brought the Omer. From then on we needed to eat from the produce of the ground; we needed parnasa, since untill now we had the mon. It is known that everything has a gate. Therefore just as we daven to Hashem to open up the gates of parnasa we have a minhag to put the form of a key on the challos to allude that Hashem should open up the gates of parnasa for us.

3) During sefira we count 49 days till Shavuos, the 50th day, which is the shaarei bina. We go from gate to gate, and each gate has a key. That is why we make an image of a key on the challah.

4) It says in Shir Hashirim 1:11 תּוֹרֵי זָהָב נַעֲשֶׂה לָּךְ עִם נְקֻדּוֹת הַכָּסֶף - "We will make for you circlets of gold with spots of silver." By the Mishkanit says זהב וכסף ונחשת, putting zahav (gold) before kesef (silver). InBereishis, by the creation of the world, the first day it says Yehi ohrwhich is chesed (which is represented by silver) and the second day represents gevurah, which in turn represents gold. The reason is that by the creation of the world it was pure chesed, as it says “the world was built on chesed” (Tehilim 89,3), therefore chesed, which is representative of kesef, precedes gevurah, which is representative ofzahav. By the Mishkan, however, Hashem had to, so-to-speak, contract (tzimtzum) the Shechina (Divine Presence) to dwell in it, andtzimtzum is from the aspect of gevurah, therefore zahav precedeskesef by the Mishkan. However, the zahav written there has thenekudah (vowel sound) of a פַתַּח (it has a patach instead of the usualkometz), it says זְהַב הַתְּנוּפָה (Shemos 38,24), and that is the nekudaof chesed –the nekuda of chochma. And פתח (the vowel) also means opening like פתח ושער- from there comes all the kindness. Putting it all together, this that we say in Shir Hashirim תּוֹרֵי זָהָב נַעֲשֶׂה לָּךְ עִם נְקֻדּוֹת הַכָּסֶף means the Mishkan was made with zahav, the aspect oftzimtzum, but with the nekuda of kesef, meaning the (word “zahav”,instead of having the usual vowel, kometz, is written with the)nekuda of patach, which is chesed. And the Shabbos after Pesach is always in the second week of sefira which is gevurah, the aspect ofzahav, except that it is menukad with kesef, nekudas patach.Through this we say that we will open up all the gates of blessing and since every gate has a מפתח (key) we make the image of a key on thechallah.

5) The previous four reasons are all brought by the Ohev Yisroel in Shabbos Acher Pesach and Likutim Parshas Shmini. There is a fifth reason brought by the Ohev Yisroel, also based on the posuk תּוֹרֵי זָהָב נַעֲשֶׂה לָּךְ עִם נְקֻדּוֹת הַכָּסֶף, connecting the written and oral Torah tochallah. (See Ohev Yisroel, Shabbos Acher Pesach)

6) The matza we ate on Pesach is supposed to instill in us Yiras Hashem. And Yirah is compared to a key as we see from the following Gemara in Mesechta Shabbos 31a-b: “Rabbah bar Rav Huna said: Any person that has Torah but doesn’t have Yiras Shomayim is comparable to a treasurer who has the keys to the inner parts (of the treasure house) but the keys to the outer area was not handed to him. How can he get to the inner parts (if he can’t first get into the outer parts)?” Therefore we put a key in the challah the Shabbos after Pesach to show we want the Yirah obtained from the matzos to stay with us, because if one has Yirah then the Torah will stay attached to him. (Yismach Yisroel)

7) The Rambam lists out at the beginning of Hilchos Chometz U’Matzathat there are 8 mitzvos (3 positive & 5 negative) involved there. The key we put in the challah alludes to this Rambam: the letters of מפתח (key) spell פ״ת ח׳ מ׳צות. (פ״ת is bread, representing the “chometz” and מ׳ is for matza- these allude to Hilchos Chometz U’Matza, and theח׳ is the 8 mitzvos involved) (Tzvi LaTzadik)

8) The Shabbos after Pesach we make challos that look like matzos, as an allusion to the matzos that were eaten on Pesach Sheini. And we put a key in it to allude to the “gates” being open untill Pesach Sheini. (Imrei Pinchos)

9) The minhag is to put keys in the challah and make them in the form of matzos. The reason is that in these seven weeks of sefira we are supposed to work on our Avodas Hashem until we reach the the level of the first night of Pesach. The way to do this is to put the “left into the right”, meaning mix the trait of ahava (right side) with yirah(left side). In this second week of sefira we have these two traits in our hands, since the first week of sefira is chesed- ahava, and the second week is gevura - yirah. That is why we make the challah look like matza. Matza is representative of the yetzer tov, the right, andchometz is representative of the yetzer horah, the left. Now, we havechallos which are true chometz, in the form of matza; “the left is in the right”, chometz in matza. (Shearis L’Pinchos)

10) There are many reasons given for the shlissel challah, and I say that the shlisel challos are the keys to parnasa. (Segulas HaBeShT V’Talmidov quoting Nachlas Yaakov)

Hamodia, Ami, Mishpacha magazines print this week of Parshas Kedoshim no Yated Ne'eman

Wondering why there is no Yated Neeman this week? due to the short work week with Pesach the Yated Ne'eman did not print this week of parshas Kedoshim. However despite the challenges, Hamodia, Ami, Mishpacha Magazine did go to print. They either prepared their issues ahead of time or on short notice. To be fair the magazines can afford to prepare in advance as they are more feature based, the newspapers are the ones with the challenge.
However the mega Pesach issues of all frum papers and magazines should still provide enough reading material for this shabbos too. Many did not get time over Yom tov to read the over 2000 pages of news, features and articles in the current 2014 pesach issues of various frum papers and magazines.

Ami Magazine had over 600  with a special section- Jaccuse! by Rabbi Yitzchok Frankfurter
and Dr. Bernard Fryshman on a visit to the Lev Tahor group in Canada. Read full Ami article HERE on Lev Tahor( Blog post from Helbrans Here video response Here) The unjust persecution of a group of pious Jews, and the unsettling silence of the Jewish community. Mishpacha magazine which featured an opposing article on Lev Tahor a week earlierboasted a Pesach edition with over 550 pages. The Yated Neeman advertised over 420 pages of quality content including pesach supplement "Magid" and a interview with noted shadchan R'Yisrael "Freddie" Friedman tackling the shidduch crisis. hamodia had its usual Yom Tov spread so did Zman magazine with over 350 pages in its expanded Pesach 5774 yom tov edition.
Kuntris magazine featured Torah from Rav Shmuel Barenbaum Z'tl.

Making light of a minhag yisrael

When it comes to the attacks on Metzitza B'peh  we strongly support and defend it in the frum Torah circles.  We chastise those who question it and vow to fight it. Same with kappores or other minhagim that have come under attack from various groups both Jewish and secular.

How hypocritical when just a few days after Pesach, articles and blog posts in the frum Torah and yeshiva world websites not only question, but make light of the segulah known as shlissel challah. When posting an article about the dangers of shlissel challah why not do the same for metzitza Bpeh. These articles would be expected in the left hating Forward. No one is saying that yiddishkeit begins and ends with shlissel challah. There is more that one can and should do for parnassah  and avodas hashem. Segulos alone will not get you to far-but to make light of it and question the concept of minhag yisrael Torah, is worse.

shlissel challah

Other cynical  articles posted HERE on a yeshiva site questioned the minhag and mesorah of shlissel challah. This segulah is brought down in sefarim from hundreds of years ago. (see article HERE) So what if your parents did not do it? Not an excuse to make light of a minhag yisrael. The frum print media did not print these articles, They know better. Its unfortunate  the online "Torah" websites think they can post anything with no guidance.

Birchas hailanos blessing on fruit tree
With a few days left until Rosh Chodesh Iyar 5774 here is the list of places where one could make a Bracha on a tree for Birchas ilanos 2014/5774. The list is courtesy of Misaskim  a comprehensive list of fruit trees throughout the USA and Canada. Although the list is from 2012 we can assume most of the trees should still be standing except for those that were knocked down by Hurricane Sandy. Most poskim agree that the halachah mentions Nissan since generally, that is the month in which trees begin to bloom  one may recite the Bracha even after Rosh Chodesh Iyar as long as the tree is still Blossoming. see Mishna Berurah 226:1   HERE

This Shabbos 3 Iyar is the Yartzheit of Reb Shaya'la of Kerestirer (1851-1925) one of the famous chasiddic Rebbes from Hungary in the early Twentieth century many are making the trip to his Kever and spend Shabbos at his house in Hungary. His picture is believed by many to be a segulah and a amulet of protection. Many stores have his picture to keep away mice.
Here is the The Famous Mouse Story- link.            (see below for story of Rav Aaron Kotler picture)
Reb Shaya Kerestirer
Affectionately known as Reb Shaya'le (Rabbi Yeshaya Steiner of Kerestir), the Kerestirer Rebbe lived around the beginning of the 20th Century. He was a very pious man and extremely humble, always referring to himself in the diminutive (Shaya'le). He was known as a "miraculous" person. His greatest pleasure was to host a very elaborate Melave Malka, the meal that follows Shabbos, on Saturday night. Often he would have his chassidim shecht fresh chickens for his meal.

One motzei Shabbos, while Reb Shaya'le was eating this special melave malka meal, a chossid came to him with an urgent request. He was a man who had a warehouse full of foodstuffs and he made his living by buying an selling food. For the past number of months, his warehouse had been taken over by mice who were eating his grain and other commodities and his entire livelihood was threatened. He asked Reb Shaya'le for a blessing that the mice should leave his warehouse. At that time, each small town in Europe was ruled by the local church pastor. Some of the pastors were kind towards the Jews and others were very harsh. Reb Shaya'le asked the chossid if the pastor of the town he lived in was kind or harsh. The chossid replied that he was very harsh toward the Jews. Reb Shaya'le then instructed the chossid to go to his warehouse and to tell the mice, "Reb Shaya'le says to go to the estate of the pastor." The chossid followed the Rebbe's advice and instantly hundreds of mice raced out of the warehouse all heading in the direction of the pastor's estate. The chossid's business was saved and ever since Jews who have been plagued with this problem have used Reb Shaya'le's picture to accomplish the ridding of mice from their homes.
Story with Picture of Rav Aharon Kotler-
Rav Aharon Kotler
Recently a story about a Bochur who went off the derech, yet he was still living at home and his parents gave him the privacy of his room they did not enter it at all. It so happened that a contractor who was working on the home had to enter the room and to his amazement amongst the not so tzniusdik pictures on the wall and other posters of rock stars and Holywood greats there was a picture of  The Lakewood Rosh hayeshiva Rav Aharon Kotler Z'TL. Not sure what to make of it he discussed it with the boys mother and a rav he didnt feel it was bakovedik for the picture of Rav Aharon to be hanging on a wall shared with other secular pritzusdiker pictures. After consulting it was decided not to make anything of it or speak to her son about it. At least let him have some connection to yiddeshkeit. Eventually he started coming to the shabbos seudos and started his way back. When asked what helped him make his turn around he explained. He once gave a donation to the Lakewood Yeshiva Beth Medrash Govoha and they sent him a poster of Rav Aaron Kotler. He dosent know why but he hung it on the wall. something about the picture talked to him and he felt Rav aharon was looking at him.
The current Rosh Yeshiva Rav Malkiel Kotler shlita remarked the Kedusha of the Zaydeh was so powerful even a picture can bring someone back to yiddeshkeit.

Lev Tahor revisited Ami magazine editorial

Following the article on Lev Tahor in pesach issue of Ami Magazine, Rabbi Frankfurter wrote in his editorial that he stands by his assessment of lev Tahor in his original article. However he acknowledges the feedback both positive and negative as the matter touches upon issues that effect not only Lev Tahor but all of klal Yisroel and debate even when heated is therefore of the essence.
 here are some excerpts.

There have been few articles in the orthodox Jewish media in recent times that triggered as much attention and discussion as did the series on Lev Tahor that appeared in the Pesach issue. In response we received both effusive praise and biting criticism  many hailed us as saviors and heroes for defending Jewish mothers, fathers, and children under siege while others saw it as  positive coverage of a group they deem to be a cult...It should be noted that defending people's fundamental rights is by no means an endorsement of their way of life. For example one may be highly critical of some of Lev Tahor's teachings or dress code while at the same time insisting that they be treated humanely, pursuant to the dictates of both Torah and common law... Lev Tahor is certainly obligated to heed the directives of gedolei Yisrael with regard to dress and behaviorand it goes without saying anyone who has first hand information of child abuse in Lev Tahor. or for that matter in any other  community, is obligated to share that information not with reporters or a blog but with the authorities or local police department. and by the same token, we must also heed the directives of the Rambam and shulchan aruch as to how to offer rebuke without shaming or slandering the recipient, loving our fellow Jew as ourselves.
The article ends with proving how the approach taken by Canadian authorities where authorities call religious instruction, abuse, was used in a Belgian court of appeals against that country's orthodox community. To deem all Orthodox Jewish education in Antwerp as a form of child abuse. For that Ami was right on target.

The story behind the viral picture of the NYC chess match by-a shas yid.

Chess match NYC Rabbi Dovid bergman Photo credit (Mo Gelber)

Hamodia newspaper  has a exclusive story about the epic chess match caught on camera between a Chassidic Jew and an African American man at Manhattan's Union Square.  HERE

The picture obviously captured people’s imaginations — two gentlemen who appeared to be around the same age seated on park benches across a chessboard table. One was a Jew dressed in traditional chassidic garments with a beard and thick peyos, his hand on a white bishop, deeply involved in deciding his next move; the other, a thinly-bearded African-American wearing jeans and a tan leather jacket, waiting patiently for his turn, a half empty water bottle lying at his side.
The background was the drab apartment buildings that dot the entire city; this one, the photographer, Mo Gelber, wrote, was at Union Square in Lower Manhattan. The circumstances for the chess game appeared intriguing but there was no way of ascertaining them.
Hamodia published the picture in Monday’s daily, a large image in the center of page 5, with the little accompanying information that was available. It was the sort of photo that comes along once a year or so, the spontaneous interaction of members of two communities that rarely mingle at the grassroots level.
As the photo burned up cybersphere, with some tagging it a “kiddush Hashem” image, the question arose: who is this man? And how did such an unlikely picture develop? Did the two men know each other?
The phone call to Hamodia’s office came early in the afternoon. The man in the photo was a recognized personality in Boro Park’s Jewish community, said the caller, who is a friend of this writer, with deep roots in the local media world. The subject of the photograph had no idea why there was so much interest in the picture, but had been convinced by friends that a major kiddush Hashem had come out of it.
Shortly afterward, I was on the phone with Dovid Bergman, a young man with an earnest demeanor, with a reputation for clarity and warmth that make him a sought-after maggid shiur.
From his nightly Daf Yomi shiur in Boro Park’s Radzyner Beis Medrash, along with his other shiurim in several shuls throughout Boro Park and Flatbush, an admirer who spoke to Hamodia on condition of anonymity estimates that Rabbi Bergman, 28, had delivered shiurim on the entire Shas already.
“This is the story the way it happened,” began Rabbi Bergman, an Amshinover chassid who grew up in Seagate. He had gone to Queens to check out a yeshivah for a job he was offered there. On the train ride home, he had to transfer to the N train at the Union Square stop.
“After three quarters of an hour sitting on the hot train,” he says, “I had to get off to air out.”
Passing a nearby park, an African-American man was sitting at a chessboard table waving at Rabbi Bergman.
“Jew, you want to have a chess game?” he called.
Rabbi Bergman decided that he had five minutes — either he would win or his opponent would win during that allotted time.
It took less than five minutes for Rabbi Bergman to win the game.
But it was enough time for the passing Gelber, a street photographer who likes to capture local flavor in his imagery, to snap his picture of the week.
“I was in shul on Shabbos,” Rabbi Bergman tells Hamodia, “and someone asked me who won the chess game. It took me about 10 seconds to figure out what he was talking about. He then told me that it was going viral.”
One person posted that the photo “gives me solace in humanity.”
“It’s one of those ‘only in America’ moments,” agreed another. “Check-mates,” pronounced a third.
Gelber, the photographer, told Hamodia that those same sentiments inspired him to snap the picture.
“Unfortunately,” Gelber said, “there is still a lot of racism in this country, and when I see a scene like this it gives me hope that one day humanity will get it right and stop hating each other based on racial stereotypes.”
Rabbi Bergman admitted feeling very uncomfortable with his 15 minutes of fame — his initial reaction to Hamodia’s publishing the picture was to ask someone to call Hamodia and request not to reprint it in Wednesday’s weekly edition — but was convinced by his friends that it was a kiddush Hashem.
Misaskim founder Yanky Meyer, who attends Rabbi Bergman’s daily shiurim, saw the picture in Hamodia on Monday and called him immediately.
“Duvid,” said Mr. Meyer, who frequently interacts with city officials, “I have relationships with the authorities — you have no idea what you did. Ashrecha! The kiddush Hashem that you caused will help the community.”
Calls to friends reveal a deep reservoir of admiration for Rabbi Bergman, who they say is a confidant of Harav Avrohom Chaim Steinwurtzel, a Rav in Boro Park, and is very close with Harav Yitzchak Tuvia Weiss, Gaavad of the Eidah Chareidis in Yerushalayim.
One friend recalled the time he helped arrange a shiur for Rabbi Bergman. The Gaavad called him personally from Eretz Yisrael to urge the plan to succeed.
“He’s an amazing person, a big talmid chacham,” the friend gushed. “He is a big baal kisharon, he has a tremendous influence on young bachurim, he is someone whom people listen to.”
So what was the friend’s reaction when he saw the chess game seen round the world?
“I was laughing. I saw it, it was amazing. It is very interesting that out of everyone you would find him in a picture like that.”

Lag Ba'omer in Miron
Since Lag B’Omer, this year falls on Sunday, May 18th, 2014 (18 Iyar,5774) one is permitted to get a haircut and shave on Friday erev shabbos , May 16th, in honor of shabbos, according to the Ra''ma. However, according to many, it is Assur to shave or take a haircut on Motzei Shabbos  (Rama"h in Shulchan Aruch, Orach Chaim 493:2)

This is also the view of Maharika”sh (Oholei Yaakov 98), quoted in Yabi’a Omer, (vol. 6, Orach Chaim 47). However, Kaf Hachaim (O.C. 493: note 32) writes that those who follow the opinion of the Mechaber and do not have a haircut until day 34 of the Omer, may not take a haircut until Monday (this year)

שדכן = שקר דובר כסף נוטל

At his Lag Ba'omer Tish yesterday the Viznitz Rebbe of Bnei Brak  spoke of some important issues relating to his flock. The rebbe spoke to those in the parsha of shidduchim, he called on people not to get upset or depressed about it, everything is from shomayim. At the same time he called on the shadchanim to put in more effort and work harder in helping singles find their bashert.

The Rebbe referenced that known saying that the roshei Teivos of the word שדכן is שקר דובר כסף נוטל, the literal translation is he speaks lies and takes money. The rebbe pointed out that a shadchan must have the smarts and know what to say and what not to say but chalila he should not lie.
The Rebbe asked that people stop pressuring and demanding of him to  to guarantee a yeshuah or refuah as all he can do is give a bracha and daven he is not in a position of   צדיק גוזר. The Rebbe said the zechus of the great day of Lag baomer will bring yeshuos to all.

Now, with the current shidduch crisis many older singles only get dates by hiding or not offering their age upfront. Some even keep themselves as as a younger age for a few years. Should we be up front and say im 32 if you can pass for 28? is there a line between a white lie or a red one?
Dont let age be a factor in a shidduch .

At the Torah Umesorah national convention which took place last week, the Rosh Yeshiva of Ner Yisroel of Baltimore Rav Aharon Feldman delivered his traditional remarks. The Rosh yeshiva spoke about the dangers of the internet and social networks.
Rav Aharon Feldman shlita
He said over fron the Vilna Gaon that when one speaks devarim  Beteilim he is enwrapped in a ruach tumah which causes one to speak even more devarim beteilim.
The RY explained that speech is the essence of life and the wanton misuse of humanity is a form of destroying it. Every Tumah is a result of extermination and destruction of life. Thus speaking devorim beteilim which can be understood as a destruction of life creates a powerful form of ruach tumah.
The Rosh yeshiva than went on to explain how this gives us a new awareness of the dangers of the internet

even without the deprivation it brings about through filth, it is also a major source for devarim Beteilim. This in turn creates a major ruach tumah which causes the person to bring about even more devarim beteilim which lands the person in the throes of addiction. This is the nisayon of our times which is destroying humanity.

The way to battle this plague said Rav Feldman is for us to reduce our own prattling. One of the major social networks is named Twitter. This meaningless exchange of information is similar to the twitter of birds which has no purposeful meaning. we can not allow it to invade our lives or inevitably it will invade the lives off our children.

It was his first official trip to the US as Ashkenazi chief Rabbi of Israel  Rabbi Dovid Lau had a full schedule in the NY metro area including a visit to YCT. Lau visited the grave of Lubavitcher Rebbe Menachem Mendel Schneerson and attended services at Orthodox synagogues and spoke, in English, at Yeshiva University, Lander College and at a event for the security of har hazaisim attended by leaders of the Agudah. The Rabbi participated in services at the Fifth Avenue Synagogue, West Side Institutional Synagogue, Lincoln Square Synagogue, The Jewish Center, Manhattan Sephardic Congregation, and Congregation B’nai Yeshurun of Teaneck.

Rabbi David Lau was also scheduled to speak at Avi weiss's Yeshiva Chovevei Torah in Riverdale on May 14, 2014. It would have given them (YCT) recognition they are so desperately looking for, yet it appears that rabbi Lau did not pay them a visit. There were no news reports or pictures of the Chief Rabbi speaking or visiting chovevei Torah. Allthough rebbeim and students of YCT did go and meet with Rabbi Lau but he did not go to YCT.

An article in the JPOST praises Rabbi Lau for reaching out to to non-Orthodox Jews in a meeting with Jewish Federation leaders on his trip to New York. However Rabbi Lau did  not visit Reform or Conservative institutions and for for the same reason probably did not pay a visit to YCT either.

The book is scheduled for release May 26th, 2014 order here at Artscroll.com
He had a mind big enough to master all of Torah. A spirit big enough to lead his people. And a heart big enough to contain all of Klal Yisrael. Maran Harav Ovadia Yosef met with Prime Ministers, Presidents, great rabbis — and the humblest Jew seeking advice or a berachah. He inspired and led a revolution in Sephardic society. But whether he was the ten-year old son of a poor grocer pleading to study Torah constantly, or an ailing man in his '90s keeping a schedule that would have tired someone half his age, Harav Ovadia Yosef had only one agenda: Torah. Always Torah. And everyday life according to the Torah. The brilliant gaon was an unyielding warrior for Torah. As a young rabbi in Cairo, he courageously stood firm for halachah even as a gun was pointed at his head. In the early days of the State of Israel, he struggled to bring his Sephardic brethren back to the magnificent Torah traditions that many were abandoning with terrifying haste.

His encyclopedic knowledge was breathtaking and unparalleled. In his scores of brilliant sefarim he "restored the crown to its glory," fighting the battles of Torah and maintaining the preeminence of Maran Beit Yosef. As unyielding as he was in defense of Torah, so was he compassionate in personal encounters. He loved all Jews, and they loved him. When there were hundreds of agunot after Israel's wars, it was to him that all turned to find the keys to their chains. So multifaceted a leader needs a multifaceted biography. In Maran Harav Ovadia we meet the sage, the leader, the visionary, the loving father of all in distress. Rabbi Yehudah Heimowitz, author of the bestselling biographies Rav Elyashiv and Rav Nosson Tzvi, brings us Maran Harav Ovadia Yosef's rich and historic life and includes hundreds of stories and vignettes based on recollections of his family, friends, and colleagues. Generous excerpts from Harav Ovadia's personal writings give us a first-hand glimpse of his encounters and achievements, while hundreds of photos and historical documents offer a visual history of his extraordinary life.
This book is the story of a great shaper of our era, a man who brought the Torah to hundreds of thousands.
