Leading religious-Zionist figure Rabbi Aharon Lichtenstein has passed away Monday morning, aged 81.  Rabbi Lichtenstein was one of the religious-Zionist world's most recognizable faces, and considered one of the world's leading halakhic authorities. He also received the illustrious Israel Prize in Torah Literature. His Levaya will start on Tuesday at 10 a.m., and is to leave from Har Etzion Yeshiva in Alon Shvut in Judea's Gush Etzion on its way to Har Hamenuchot in Jerusalem where the rabbi will be buried. Born in Paris on May 1933, shortly after the Nazi conquest of France in 1940 his family fled to the US, where he would eventually study under two of the Jewish world's leading rabbis: Rabbi Yitzhak Hutner and Rabbi Yoseph Soloveitchik.

He soon became a close student of Rabbi Soloveitchik in particular - considered the founder of the Modern Orthodox movement - studying for many years under his guidance at Yeshiva University in New York.

In 1959 Rabbi Lichtenstein was ordained by his mentor, and shortly after married Rabbi Soloveitchik's daughter.

In 1970 he was invited by Rabbi Yehuda Amital to co-head one of the first hesder yeshivot, which combine Torah study and military service - Yeshivat Har Etzion in Alon Shvut.

Rabbi Lichtenstein took up the position a year later upon making aliyah with his family, and served as one of its Rosh Yeshiva until his passing, although in recent years he had scaled back his activities due to poor health. He is survived by his wife, Dr. Tovah, his children Rav Yitzchak,  who is a Rav in Monsey and RY in Novardik, Rav Moshe, Rav Meir, Rav Shai, Esti and Tonya, and by two sisters, Hadassah Kleiman and Shoshana Lichtenstein, and thousands of talmidim  source

Harav Yosef Moshe Meisels, z”l Veitzener Rav of Williamsburg

Hamodia- Klal Yisrael lost one of its last precious links to the Gedolim of previous generations with the passing of Harav Yosef Moshe Meisels, zt”l, the Veitzener Rav of Williamsburg. He was the son of Harav Tzvi Hirsh Meisels, zt”l, the Veitzener Rav of Chicago and a scion of the Chassidic dynasties of Uhel and Sanz.

The niftar was renowned for his impeccable middos, calm nature, and chessed. At the same time, Rav  Meisels was a man of tremendous spiritual strength and tenacity who was steadfast in his loyalty not only to Torah and mitzvos, but to the most minute practice of his holy antecedents through the challenges of the Holocaust and then of post-war Eretz Yisrael and America.

He was born in 1926 in the Galician town of Neimark, where his father served as Rav before assuming his position in Veitzen in Hungary. He studied mainly under the tutelage of his grandfather, Harav Dovid Dov Meisels, Hy”d, the author of the sefer Binyan Dovid.
Young Yosef Moshe was also privileged to bask in the light of several tzaddikim of the time, including Harav Shalom Lazer Halberstam, Hy”d, the Raczferter Rav, a son of the Divrei Chaim of Sanz;  the Minchas Elazar of Munkacs; and the Chakal Yitzchak of Spinka.

During the war, the niftar was interned in various ghettos, before being transferred to a work camp. He recalled the many times that he was within minutes of death and was miraculously saved.

Soon after liberation, Rav Meisels traveled to Eretz Yisrael, where he became a talmid muvhak of Harav Yosef Tzvi Dushinsky, zt”l, the Rav of Yerushalayim. For the rest of his life, the niftar remained especially attached to the memory of his dear rebbi, and studied his sefarim daily, even authoring a commentary on his writings on Meseches Shviis.

In 1948 he traveled to America to marry Malka Shneck, a”h, the daughter of Reb Moshe Schnek, z”l. Harav Meisels lived first in Chicago working as a sofer and melamed. Despite his vast Torah knowledge, great hasmadah, and prominent lineage, he was insistent on not relying on these for his livelihood, and for most of the half century that he lived in Williamsburg worked in New York’s 47th Street diamond district.

Following his father’s petirah in 1974, Rav Meisels opened the Veitzener Beis Medrash of Williamsburg.

Daniel Cole and Mendy Losh are currently in Nepal, and were making their way towards the base of the Himalayan Mountains when the quake struck. Their families have not been able to get in touch with them since.

“I just got off the phone with someone who said that they heard from the [group’s] tour guide, who said that everyone is okay, but I have yet to hear my husband’s voice and am still worried,” Elkie Cole, Dani’s wife, told CrownHeights.info.

In a Facebook post, Mendy Losh’s brother wrote “we just got a message that they are fine.”

Until this ordeal is confirmed to be over, for these two and countless others, the public is asked to say Tehillim in the merit of the missing and the hurt.

Many in Crown Heights and around the world are breathing a sigh of relief early Monday, as two Crown Heights residents who were hiking in the mountains in Nepal and were not heard from for many hours, were confirmed safe late Sunday night.

Danny Cole, a father of four from Crown Heights and Mendy Losh, originally from Crown Heights and recently a resident of Los Angeles, were hiking in the area when the earthquake hit.

At 1:45 am early Monday, Yitzi Cole, brother of Danny Cole, said in an email to COLlive, "BH I can confirm that they have made contact and that they are OK."

Cole said they are currently at the Everest Base Camp, waiting to be airlifted out to safety.

A few minutes later, Mendy Losh sent a text to his friend Zevi Steinhauser saying, "We are safe. We had no connection the last two days. Hope to get more connection in a few hours. Phone about to die and bad connection here."

Steinhauser was overjoyed to receive the text, having waited all day for word from his friends. "I had already decided that if I had not heard anything by Monday, I would get on a plane and travel there to try and find them," he told COLlive. "People were being unbelievably kind, offering financial assistance and other help to myself and the family for any travel rescue efforts."

The conditions are fine at the Base Camp, Steinhauser said, who has since received other communication from the hikers. They have shelter, enough food, and are in good shape.

The two were traveling with a Nepalese Sherpa guide, having flown into the town of Lukla, and were hiking from there to climb part of mount Everest. After the quake, they were unable to continue or travel back without assistance.

52nd Annual National Pirchei Agudas Yisroel Siyum Mishnayos celebrated

Another year; another rousing celebration. On Sunday afternoon, the cavernous Palace ballroom in Brooklyn was filled with over 1,000 boys celebrating the 52nd annual National Siyum Mishnayos of Pirchei Agudas Yisroel of America al Shem Rabbi Yehoshua Silbermintz zt"l.

Youthful enthusiasm permeated the air from the moment a long line of coach buses from out-of-town communities, filled with children, streamed down McDonald Avenue. An additional large number, some with their proud fathers alongside them, came from throughout the Boro Park/Flatbush area by foot and by car.

This is Pirchei Agudas Yisroel's flagship event celebrating all the Mishnayos learned, all the spiritual inspiration - and all the fun, trips and raffles - that help the next generation carry forth the torch of Torah with enthusiasm and pride.
A number of leading roshei yeshiva and rabbonim graced the event, including Rabbi Yisroel Belsky, Rosh HaYeshiva Torah Vodaath; Rabbi Shlomo Mandel, Rosh HaYeshiva, Yeshiva of Brooklyn; Rabbi Moshe Tuvia Lieff, Rav, Agudas Yisroel Bais Binyomin; and others.

Founded by legendary mechanchim Rabbi Yehoshua Silbermintz z"l and Rabbi Eli Teitelbaum z"l, Pirchei Agudas Yisroel has been a bedrock for Orthodox youth in America for over a half century of turbulent times for our community. Rabbi Fischel Schachter, who served as emcee at the Siyum, drove home this point in his unique entertaining manner. Rabbi Schachter described the era in the 20th century when many Jews had to choose between keeping Shabbos and keeping their jobs. Pirchei Agudas Yisroel served as their children's anchor for the future. The children went to Pirchei where there was Torah, oneg Shabbos, warmth and camaraderie. Many people from that generation say, 'Pirchei saved my life.'"

Uplifting Accomplishment
The Siyum brought together boys in grades 4-8 from throughout the northeast: Brooklyn, Cherry Hill, Lakewood, Monsey, Passaic, Philadelphia, Queens, South Fallsburg, Staten Island and more. The constant cheers and applause attested to their excitement to be part of this global youth Torah movement.

In addition to the sandwiches, nosh and soda that was given to every boy at the entrance, there was a raffle for exciting prizes every few minutes.

Close to 40 boys finished Shisha Sidrei Mishna as part of the Kesser Mishnayos Program. In honor of this extraordinary accomplishment, they were invited to sit on the dais during the Siyum. Before the doors opened to the Siyum, these
mesaymim attended a special VIP gathering where Rabbi Yehoshua Grunfeld, Rosh Kollel Iyun Hatalmud of Monsey, tested them on Mishnayos and offered warm divrei chizuk.

The other boys in the audience learned and were tested on various amounts of Mishnayos during the past year, and participated in the exciting weekly programs and special trips of their local Pirchei chapter.
Rabbi Grunfeld led the tinnokos shel bais rabban in reciting Tehillim, particularly for the refuah shleima of Rabbi Avrohom Chaim Levin, Rosh HaYeshiva of Telshe Yeshiva - Chicago and member of the Moetzes Gedolei HaTorah.

Rabbi Ephraim Levi, national director of Pirchei Agudas Yisroel, elaborated upon just how broad the Pirchei movement is. There are over 125 chapters across North America - 10 added within the past year alone - in addition to similar groups around the world. "I personally attended five Pirchei Siyumim around the world, including Antwerp, Belgium; Chicago, Denver, Montreal, Canada; and Scranton" said Rabbi Levi.

A special video presentation was shown highlighting the life and accomplishments of Rabbi Chaim Mordechai Katz zt"l, Telzer Rosh Yeshiva, in honor of his 50th yartzeit. The presentation highlighted the rich history of Telz in Europe and how "Reb Mottel" rebuilt the Torah dynasty in America, despite many difficulties in his personal life and in his avodas hakodesh. By founding leading Yeshivos in both Cleveland and Chicago, Reb Mottel rightly earned his place as one of the premier builders of Torah in the Midwest.
Rabbi Yosef Frankel, Vyelipoler Rebbe and member of the Moetzes Gedolei HaTorah, delivered divrei beracha, opening his address with a warm greeting: "It is a privilege to address such a maamad Kiddush Hashem by the children of hakadosh baruch hu.

"The Rebbe expounded upon the words of the Gemara in Maseches Bava Basra that yidden are considered to be Hashem's children, as opposed to servants, when they do His will. The "will" of Hashem is not merely what He commands us to do, but rather when we do what He would want even when not obligated. "When you learn Torah during your own time, you're doing what Hashem wants," the Rebbe told the Pirchei boys.

A Common Simcha
The Hadran on Shisha Sidrei Mishna, and the has'chala of the new cycle, was recited by the boys who were mesayeim all of it. Each one of these boys had a chance at the podium to say his portion. The sight was exceptionally heartwarming. The saying of Kaddish was sponsored by Mr. and Mrs. Abe Eisner in honor of their parents a"h.

Following the Siyum, Rabbi Chaim Dovid Zwiebel, executive vice president of Agudath Israel of America, spoke about how Pirchei Agudas Yisroel is a crucial component of the broader Agudas Yisroel movement. He referenced the famous newly unearthed video of the Chofetz Chaim zt"l at the first Knessiah Gedolah of Agudas Yisroel. "That is a reminder that Agudas Yisroel is a movement that was founded by the greatest gedolei Yisroel of the world," Rabbi Zwiebel exclaimed. "Here you are carrying forth their legacy through limud haTorah!"

The beautiful Siyum culminated with birchas hamazon, singing "Siman Tov" in unison, a grand raffle, and a special video presentation on Shmittah by Rabbi Maimon Elbaz. Rabbi Elbaz delved into various aspects of Shmittah, all vividly displayed in color. He discussed some of the history of shemiras Shmittah in Eretz Yisroel; what is perrmitted and forbidden; what type of purchases we must beware of in America due to Shmittah concerns; the miracles that shomrei Shviis have experienced over the years; as well as some of the mussar lessons that the gedolim have learned from this special mitzvah.

Rabbi Elbaz expressed his amazement at their familiarity with hilchos Shviis, attributing this in part to what they learned in Mishnayos Maseches Shviis within the Pirchei program.

The boys went home inspired and enthusiastic, already looking forward to the 53rd Siyum Mishnayos.

Curfew in Baltimore may effect yeshiva Bochurim coming home from night seder

The mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake announced a weeklong, citywide 10 p.m. curfew starting Tuesday night to quell riots and looting that broke out on Baltimore's west side Monday. Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan declared a state of emergency and requested the Maryland National Guard to assist Baltimore police and several other state and local agencies in enforcing the curfew. The latest curfew will supplement the city's strict juvenile curfew, instituted last year, requiring children younger than 14 to be indoors by 9 p.m. on school nights. Those older than 14 may stay out until 10 p.m. on school nights and 11 p.m. on weekends and over the summer. Under the curfew, people may not be out on the road unless they are driving to or from work or have a medical emergency.

Borough park crowned as baby capital of NYC

$

JP The NY Post on Monday sounded the alarm on the city’s birth rate, which, according to the paper, is the lowest since 1936. The numbers are truly troubling: half the city’s babies belong to foreign-born moms, mostly Asians; almost 6 out of every 10 mothers are on Medicaid; and some 40 percent of all new mothers are unwed.
In that gloomy scene, one group shines through with a robust birthrate and a sound family structure–you guessed it, Orthodox Jews. In fact, Borough Park, one of the city’s half dozen bastions of Orthodox Jewish life, was dubbed by the Post “easily the city’s baby capital,” with a birth rate of 27.9 per 1,000 residents. A whopping (and hopping) 5,458 babies were born in Borough Park in 2013, kein ein hora.

Upper middle class Bayside, Queens, received the dubious honor of having the city’s lowest birthrate: 652 babies in 2013, 5.5 per 1,000.

“Our community is making up for the rest of the city,” grandfather of six and also Borough Park Assemblyman Dov Hikind told the Post, adding, “In our community, having children is fundamental. They are our most precious resource.”

The richest and the poorest New Yorkers apparently share the lowest birthrate citywide, with 55 percent of African American women opting for abortions. 2013 saw only 12.7 babies per 1,000 in the black community.

One upside to this sad state of promulgation is that fact that the city’s teen birthrate has dropped a full 10 percent from 2012 to 2013, marking a 37.6 percent decline since 2004.

Agudah Files Brief in Historic Supreme Court Case

$

Hamodia As the Supreme Court prepared to hear oral argument in a case that could radically alter the moral fiber of the nation’s legal code, Agudath Israel of America submitted an amicus curiae (friend of the court) brief urging the High Court to preserve the traditional understanding of the issue.
“The guidance that we have received from the Moetzes Gedolei HaTorah is that when there is an issue of the distortion of the position of the Torah that is promulgated by non-Orthodox groups in a public forum that we must speak up and set the record straight,” Rabbi Chaim Dovid Zwiebel, Agudath Israel’s executive vice president, told Hamodia.
The high-profile case, Obergefell v. Hodges, has resulted in the submission of over 140 amicus briefs to the court, a record-setting number.

Rabbi Zwiebel said that should the court side with the plaintiffs, “not only would it accelerate a dangerous social revolution in the broad society around us, it could severely jeopardize the religious liberty and social standing of religious communities like ours that can never accept such a legal innovation.”

The brief also discusses why a determination that traditional laws are unconstitutional would pose a serious threat to religious liberty. Even in those states that have enacted new laws, the brief points out, at the same time they have enacted certain protections for religious dissenters who adhere to the new laws, for example, the right of clergy members to refuse as a matter of religious conviction to participate in immoral situations. In contrast, if the court rules for plaintiff, the rights of religious dissenters may remain unprotected.

Commenting on the significance of the Agudath Israel brief, Rabbi Zwiebel bemoaned “the sad fact — the tragic fact! — that ours was the only Jewish voice standing up for traditional values. All the other Jewish amicus curiae groups — including the Reform, Conservative and Reconstructionist groups, in a brief submitted jointly with a number of non-Jewish religious groups — came down on the side of [the plaintiff].’”

“I hope the Supreme Court will recognize the strength of our legal arguments, and reject the constitutional challenge. Only time will tell. But for one thing we need not wait: getting the message out to the world around us, and especially to the Jewish world around us, that no matter what the falsifiers of Judaism may say, we can never accept the validity [of this position]. If our brief accomplishes nothing more than delivering that message, we will already have accomplished a great deal.”
