President Obama Designates Agudath Israel Official for Key U.S. Commission

President Barack Obama has indicated his intention to appoint Rabbi Abba Cohen to "a key Administration post," according to a recent White House announcement.  The proposed appointment would make Rabbi Cohen a member of the U.S. Commission for the Preservation of America's Heritage Abroad.

The Commission is an independent federal agency, which was established 30 years ago through legislation introduced by the late Brooklyn Representative Stephen Solarz and the late Massachusetts Senator Ted Kennedy. Under the law, the Commission is to identify and report on endangered cemeteries, monuments, and historic buildings in Europe - associated with the heritage of U.S. citizens - and to obtain, in cooperation with the Department of State, assurances from the 29 governments of the region that the properties will be protected and preserved. Many Jewish sacred sites have been safeguarded and restored through the Commission's efforts.

Rabbi Cohen, who serves as Agudath Israel of America's Vice President for Federal Affairs and Washington Director, has over the past 25 years worked with top State Department officials, Commission members, Congressional leaders, and foreign representatives in facilitating such projects. He was introduced to this work by the late, revered Agudath Israel leaders Rabbi Moshe Sherer and Rabbi Chaskel Besser, who were trailblazers in making the protection and restoration of Jewish cemeteries, synagogues and other religious and historic sites a Jewish community priority. Highlighting this critical need to Congressional leaders eventually led to the Commission's establishment.

While the Commission is concerned with sites integral to the heritage of all Americans, communal properties that are associated with the history and culture of the Jewish people represent a particularly compelling need.  The extermination of European Jewry by the Nazis was accompanied by the destruction, desecration, and deterioration of Jewish properties.  This persisted under subsequent anti-Semitic Communist regimes, which hindered access to Americans who wanted to ensure preservation of the sites.  Many Jewish properties continue to be endangered, particularly due to the resurgence of anti-Semitism in Central and Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union.

Rabbi Chaim Dovid Zwiebel, Agudath Israel of America's Executive Vice President, said, "We at Agudath Israel are so proud of Rabbi Cohen. This is not only a well-deserved honor for him, it is a wonderful development for the vital cause the Commission was established to address. Abba brings to this position experience, intelligence, thoroughness, passion and know-how, and we have every confidence he will be a major asset to the Commission."

American Friends of the Ehrlich Family

1070 38th Street Brooklyn NY 11219
Donate NowOn Tuesday, June 2nd the Ehrlich family of Yerushalayim was struck by a terrible tragedy. Sadly, tragedy is no stranger to this family; only a year and a half ago they lost their beloved mother, Mrs. Liba Ehrlich, after a long and painful battle with cancer.

A few short weeks ago their father, Reb Moshe Ehrlich, son of the renowned Yiddish composer and folk singer Reb Yom Tov Ehrlich, was diagnosed with cancer. The terrifying disease was quick and destructive, and within a few weeks, Reb Moshe was gone.

The family of orphans was crushed; especially the three youngest who are still unmarried. Preparations were started to begin the process of the levaya and burial, and that’s where the real trouble started.

The ChevraKadisha [burial society] would not deal with the body of Reb Moshe until the family paid the sum of $25,000. This amount was not only for expenses of Reb Moshe’s burial and plot, but also for fees incurred by the burial of his wife, 1.5 years ago.

We must show our support and come to the rescue of these poor orphans! What was done in the past 24 hours is proof that there are hundreds of caring people with open hearts who will jump in and do their share to ease the pain and burden of a family who suffered tragedy after tragedy. The new goal is now $100,000. This will provide the basic needs of the family for the time being and will hopefully assist in marrying off these children when the time comes.

THIS PROJECT IS ENDORSED BY RABBI SHMUEL DISHON SHLITA, A CLOSE FRIEND OF THE FAMILY.

NYC Health Board Votes to Consider Rescinding MBP Regulation

Three months after the de Blasio administration reached an agreement with community representatives that would end the highly controversial regulation of bris Milah enacted by the Bloomberg administration, the New York City’s Board of Health has voted unanimously to consider the mayor’s plan. After a comment period, the board will vote on formally rescinding the regulation that required mohalim to ask parents to sign a consent form espousing the city’s view associating MBP with HSV-1 herpes infections, a position dismissed by leading medical experts and veteran mohalim.
Health Commissioner Dr. Mary Travis Bassett said the regulation had a polarizing effect and is difficult to implement. According to the new plan a new protocol will be implemented, one that will use cutting-edge DNA testing to determine the real source of herpes infection in infants.

Must Commercially Cleaned Lettuce Still be Checked? Kosher Agency says Yes

$

KT-The kashrus world is unanimous in requiring lettuce to be checked for insects. Agencies generally accepted the notion that pre-washed (bagged) iceberg lettuce is acceptable from any source, even if it is not certified as kosher.  This is because the method of commercially cleaning leafy lettuces is sufficient to remove the insects typically found in iceberg lettuce.  However, in recent weeks, says the cRc, lettuce coming from specific regions in California have been more heavily infested than usual, and that the cleaning methods in use have not always been successful in removing all insects from the lettuce.  This has caused some kashrus agencies to temporarily remove certification from a number of brands of iceberg lettuce, of which the Fresh Express brand is the most prominent.

A cRc statement noted: “We have not been able to independently confirm these results on a national scale, but accept the findings of these hechsherim based on the research of experienced Mashgichim in multiple cities.  Accordingly, the cRc recommends that for the remainder of June 2015, consumers nationally should either (a) purchase iceberg lettuce which bears reliable kosher certification, or (b) wash and inspect iceberg lettuce (fresh or bagged) as per the directions found at http://kshr.us/IcebergLettuce.

Fate of Tuition Aid Bill ‘Unknown’ as Deadline Looms

$

Hamodia - A potentially historic tuition aid bill is achingly close to passing, according to private school advocates.

But the fate of either version of the education tax credit currently before the legislature is unknown, even as lawmakers prepare to leave Albany on Friday as the session winds down for the year.

“Nobody knows,” one activist knowledgeable in the negotiations told Hamodia on Tuesday afternoon. “It’s impossible to know at this point.”

Activists from Agudath Israel of America, which last month termed the bill a “watershed” moment in aiding yeshivah parents with tuition, were up in Albany once again on Tuesday in a last-minute attempt to coax Assembly members to vote it in.

“The issue is still very much on the table,” an Agudah official said. “The governor is holding strong, the Senate is holding strong, it’s just an issue of how the Assembly will go.”

Participants on the mission included Rabbi Chaim Dovid Zwiebel, the organization’s executive vice president; Rabbi Shmuel Lefkowitz, vice president for community affairs; Leon Goldenberg and Chaskel Bennett, Agudah trustees; and Shai Markowitz.

The group met with Senate Majority Leader John Flanagan, officials in the Cuomo administration and a number of Assembly members.

The effort received a boost Monday when Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams personally appealed to Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie to help pass the private education bill.

Noting that Brooklyn has 433 private schools serving more than 120,000 students — the most of any county in the nation — Adams in a letter called helping parents with tuition bills “an important goal.”

“The New York state legislature cannot miss this opportunity to help these families educate their children in the way they see fit,” Adams wrote, cc’ing all assemblymen in his letter.

The letter comes a day after Adams pledged in a meeting with leaders of the Flatbush Jewish Community Coalition to get involved in the battle.

As the current legislative session winds down, a record three bills are in the pipeline that would help parents of non-public school students. This is a stunning shift from as recently as two years ago, when powerful teachers’ unions blocked any aid for private schools.

A beefed-up Republican majority in the Senate, along with Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s battles with the teachers’ unions on tenure and raising the cap on charter schools, have opened up a rare chance to get the first real assistance for yeshivah parents in decades.

The only bill to have actually passed is one introduced by Sens. Simcha Felder and Martin Golden. The Senate voted earlier this year on a $150 million bill to allow donors to a scholarship fund to deduct 90 percent of the amount from their tax bill. The amount, which increases incrementally to $300 million in three years, is divided evenly between public school and private school expenses.

After a half-hearted lobbying effort for the bill in the budgetary process that ended in March, Cuomo last month proposed his own bill, which would allow only a 75 percent deduction and lowers the overall amount to $50 million.

However, in a move that has electrified tuition-payer advocates, Cuomo added a $70 million component that would give parents $500 a year for every child they pay tuition for, regardless of whether they pay taxes.

The drawback with the bill is that it is capped at $60,000 for a family of four. A third bill, sponsored by Assembly members Sheldon Silver and Rodneyse Bichotte and formally introduced on Friday, raises that cap to $120,000 and applies it to expenses for public school parents as well. It would also give $3,000 per child — with a maximum of $12,000 — rather than the $500 proposed by Cuomo.

Assembly Education Committee Chairwoman Cathy Nolan joined the bill as a sponsor. However, Silver’s and Bichotte’s plan does not have the education tax credit deduction, seen by some activists as the real solution to the tuition crunch.

This third bill has not gained traction in the Assembly and is seen as having little chance of passing.

Transition? or an attack on the Kolell youngeleit

A recent article in Binah magazine this past week had a cover story about couples transitioning from the husband being in kollel to the husband going out to work and the difficulties in this transition.
The article it seems took swipes at the current Kolell sytem instead of factually reporting on the youngeleit who leave the koslei Bais hamedrash for parnassah. The writer points out how the kolell life is great and fun, compared to that of a husband who works full time.
I was always taught to feel like it's something special to sacrifice for Torah. Well, you leave kollel and you realise that almost EVERYONE has to make sacrifices for life. It is a fact of life that the world is set up for hard work, its the way God made it, but somehow in the kollel mentality you forget that .
One might even start to look with cynicism at the yeshiva families who are so proud of their sacrifices, now that you realise that they actually have it pretty good. ... compared to the life of the person working up from the bottom tier, kollel life is nice .
Of course the objective is that after a few years of clawing our way through college and entry level, we will end up in a more relaxed life, please God. My husband will still be working full time hours with none of the sweet family schedule stuff , but hopefully money will be less tight

Sorry, but sacrificing for Torah IS special. Torah keeps up the world. Most people today are not in Kolell. Those that are there are sacrificing for hashem. If your husband were a millionaire and a workaholic would you also complain?  Kolell life is not measured by how often your husband was around to help you. Its the Torah that he learned giving everything up just for Hashem.

Finally some common sense!

Sreifas HaTalmud 5775 Fascist Demonstrators to Burn Talmud at London Rally in Jewish Neighborhood

The extreme right-wing organizers of a Saturday protest in a predominantly Jewish London neighborhood plan to burn Israeli flags and even a copy of the Jewish Oral Law, or Talmud, the UK’s Jewish Chronicle reported on Tuesday.
(Erev Shabbat Chukath,1242- 5004 known as vov Chukas Twenty-four cartloads of Hebrew manuscripts were publicly burned  in Paris  Rabbi Meir was an eyewitness to the public burning of the twenty-four cartloads of Talmudic manuscripts (and he bewailed this tragedy in his celebrated "Kina" Shaali serufah (שאלי שרופה) which is still recited on Tisha B'Av.)

Right-wing activist Joshua Bonehill-Paine called on demonstrators through his website to bring Israeli flags to the July 4 demonstration in the mostly Orthodox Jewish neighborhood of Golders Green to “dismember … by hand,” which apparently sidesteps the legal complications of burning national flags.

“This will be a show of solidarity by English people who recognize that Israel is a corrupt state which is responsible for horrific war crimes,” wrote Bonehill-Paine.

Additionally, the activist said there would be a private meeting held before the demonstration in which copies of the Talmud could be burned “in recognition of its racist Anti-White [sic] teachings.”

Bonehill said the purpose of the July 4 protest, which will take place on the Jewish Sabbath, was to demonstrate against the Jewish Shomrim, or Jewish civilian patrols set up to combat, inter alia, antisemitic crime, burglary, vandalism, assault and domestic violence.

White supremacy group the New Dawn Party posted to its Twitter page an advertisement for the July 4 protest with a banner that read: “This is London, not Tel Aviv.”

Another post, dated to Sunday, said the protest was meant to demonstrate against “Jewish privilege.” It ridiculed Jews for having “their own Police force” that “receives training and funding from our own Police force.”

A longtime right-wing and white-supremacist commentator on the Internet, Bonehill-Paine has been investigated by police before on charges of harassment, antisemitic speech and hoaxing.

He had previously planned a Stamford Hill march against the “Jewification of Great Britain,” but those plans were postponed and ultimately scrapped.

According to the British Independent newspaper, the London Shomrim consists of about 80 volunteers and focuses its efforts on neighborhoods with strong Jewish populations, such as Golders Green, Hendon and Barnet. Volunteers are trained by police and don knife-proof vests, and the network boasts a 24-hour hotline.

The Community Security Trust, with about 10 years of experience working to protect British Jewish communities, has said it is “fully aware of this explicitly antisemitic demonstration” and was in contact with police and government officials over the issue, according to the JC.
